In Poland, a laser system has been developed which can detect alcohol vapors
inside passing vehicles from more than 60 feet away. Many are heralding
this as a great tool that should be used in DUI crackdowns. Would you
like to see these lasers used by law enforcement here in the US to enforce
DUI laws? One of the significant problems we see with this sort of technology
is the fact that these lasers cannot differentiate between alcohol vapors
attributable to passengers or spilled beverages and vapors emitting from
the breath of the driver. This would mean that officers could pull people
over even if a designated driver who was under the legal limit was operating
the vehicle.
